Orion 9024 AstroView 90mm Equatorial Refractor Telescope

Orion’s AstroView 90 equatorial refractor telescope is a classic Achromatic refractor with excellent optics and an unusually good accessory package. Bigger and more impressive than it looks in pictures, the AstroView 90 is an adult size telescope that stands nearly five feet high and weighs almost 25 pounds. With fully illustrated instructions the telescope is easy to assemble, and the package includes two Sirius Plossl eyepieces, a 6x30 optical finder scope, and Orion’s Starry Night planetarium software for your computer.

                  Price: $283.49

  • A powerful, high-quality refractor telescope at a jaw-dropping low price

  • 90mm (3.5") aperture and 910mm focal length for crisp views of deep-sky objects, the Moon, and planets

  • Included EQ-2 adjustable tripod and equatorial mount for manual slow-motion celestial tracking

  • Includes two Sirius Plossl 1.25" eyepieces (25mm and 10mm), 6x30 finder scope, smooth-adjusting 1.25" rack & pinion focuser, 90-degree mirror diagonal for comfortable nighttime performance, Starry Night astronomy software, and more

  • Can also be used for pleasing daytime terrestrial viewing with a correct-image diagonal (correct-image diagonal sold separately)

Refractors are known for their crisp, high contrast views of the Moon and planets and the AstroView 90 delivers sharp views right out of the box. The low power 25mm Sirius Plossl eyepiece (36X magnification) nicely frames the moon, while the high power 10mm eyepiece (91X magnification) delivers a crisp close up image full of detail. The sharp Achromatic optics of the AstroView 90 EQ also give me delightful views of deep space objects. On a moonless night I like the way the 25mm eyepiece frames the ghostly glow of the Orion Nebula. Zooming in with the 10mm Sirius Plossl eyepiece, I can easily pick out all four stars of the Orion Nebula’s embedded quadruple star the Trapezium. Another night I used an Ultima 2X Barlow with the 10mm plossl eyepiece for a total magnification of 182X while viewing the planet Jupiter. I was rewarded with a clear view of Jupiter’s famous Great Red Spot.

The Equatorial mount included with the AstroView 90 EQ is designed to help track stars and planets at high power. When I set up the telescope, I simply point the polar axis at Polaris, the North Star. This makes it easy to keep celestial objects in the field of view by turning one slow motion knob. Orion also offers the EQ-2M Electronic Telescope Drive which features a battery powered motor for automatic tracking. The EQ-2 equatorial mount is a little wobbly when the legs are fully extended, but that’s normal for any large telescope in this price range.

  • Each lens element is personally inspected to guarantee purity and absence of striations.

  • The Skywatcher Quantum Refractor delivers diffraction limited optics that will perform flawlessly

  • The SkyWatcher Quantum virtually eliminates residual chromatic aberration, otherwise known as fals

The Sky-Watcher Quantum 6"/150mm Refractor from Celestron offers from 21x up to 354x magnification and is suitable for lunar, planetary, binary/star cluster, and galaxy/nebula observation. ED-APO quality, triplet refractor optics features three elements - two of Schott glass. There is a 6" or 150mm aperture, 1050mm focal length and an f/7 focal ratio for high-quality observation. Polished from high grade S-FPL53 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass; the ED element minimizes chromatic aberration to produce images with enhanced sharpness, and reduce false color halos and fringing.

Equipped with a fully-multicoated 9x50mm correct-image right-angle finderscope with machined dovetail bracket, the Sky-Watcher Quantum 150 telescope offers enhanced brightness and contrast. Anti-reflection multi-coating on all the air-to-glass surfaces helps to minimize light scatter, and offers enhanced contrast and high light transmission. The six contrast-enhancing internal light baffles in the tube, the focuser drawtube, and a specially darkened tube interior help provide dark sky backgrounds and high terrestrial contrast. The carbon fiber lens shade slows down the formation of dew on the lens in cold weather and offers protection from dust and wind-blown air particles.

The 2" focuser features dual speed focusing and micro-fine adjustments with an engraved scale. The draw tube has a very generous 3.4" diameter and includes an eyepiece adapter. A 28mm eyepiece provides 38x magnification right out of the box without having to purchase additional eyepieces until you are sure what you want. The Sky-Watcher Quantum 150 provisions a dielectric mirror star diagonal with high light transmission. There is an included thread-on field flattener. The finderscope is a 9x50 right-angle erecting image scope. The Rayleigh resolution is 0.93 arc seconds while the Dawes resolution value comes out as 0.77 arc seconds and the light gathering power is reported as 459x. The fully illuminated field is 1.69" or 43mm.

The telescope integrates a dual hinged split-ring tube rings and a CGE style dovetail mounting bar that fits into the Vixen-style dovetail slot on the head of several altazimuth and German equatorial mounts. The telescope comes in a foam-fitted aluminum-clad shipping and storage case. Mount and tripod are available separately.

  • Ultra-smooth, precision linear bearing focuser with large 3.4" diameter drawtube, fine and micro-fine 2-speed focusing adjustments with an engraved scale and a 2" eyepiece adapter

  • Multicoated optics on all air-to-glass lens surfaces reduces light loss and glare due to reflection offering a brighter, higher-contrast image

  • Thread-on field flattener lens provides sharp, focused stars across a large 43mm image circle. Compatible with M48 camera adapter rings

  • Carbon fiber lens shade protects the objective lens from dust, moisture and unwanted ambient light. Retracts for compact storage and mobility

  • Ready to be mounted. Metal tube rings and a CGE-style dovetail plate included. Mount and tripod must be supplied by the user

  • Triplet design to eliminate chromatic aberration by the use of extra-low dispersion (ED) glass S-FPL53, and Schott glass

  • Carbon fiber optical tube furnishes thermal stability, dent and scratch-resistance and a stylish protective finish

  • Aluminum case offers protection minimizing the concern and worry of transport

  • Six internal baffles maximize contrast and minimize reflection

Orion 09882 Observer 70mm Equatorial Refractor Telescope (Black)

Orion’s Observer 70 EQ combines the solid optical performance of a classic achromatic refractor with a German style equatorial mount. The Observer 70 features very good optics and 36 percent more light gathering power than 60mm beginner scopes. The complete accessory package includes high and low power eyepieces, a 90 degree star diagonal, a red-dot finder, illustrated instructions, and Orion‘s Starry Night Special Edition astronomy software.

                  Price: $169.99

  • A great entry-level 70mm refractor telescope at a very affordable price

  • Reveals detailed views of the Moon and bright planets such as Jupiter and Saturn

  • 70mm (2.75 inch) aperture and 700mm focal length telescope provides great views of bright night-sky objects such as star clusters and cloudy nebulas

  • Includes sturdy tripod and equatorial (EQ) mount for convenient manual slow-motion tracking of celestial objects as they appear to migrate across the night sky

  • Includes two 1.25 inch telescope eyepieces, EZ Finder II aiming sight, smooth rack and pinion focuser, 90 degree mirror diagonal for comfortable viewing, Starry Night astronomy software, and more!

The Observer 70 EQ features very good optical performance. Achromatic refractors have a two piece objective lens, the second lens element compensates for “chromatic aberration”, the false color or blue fringes seen in low cost telescopes. In daylight tests I see very little blue fringing with the standard equipment 10mm eyepiece (70X magnification), and none at all with the 25mm eyepiece (28X). Stars and planets show up very nicely with the Observer 70. The quadruple star in the Orion Nebula known as the Trapezium is cleanly split into four components with the 10mm eyepiece (70X magnification). When I combine the 10mm eyepiece with a 2X Barlow lens for 140X magnification, I’m treated to lovely views of Saturn’s rings and the little orange disk of Mars. My view of the Moon is delightfully crisp and clear; the 25mm eyepiece nicely frames the Lunar disk, and using the 10mm eyepiece I can easily see mountain peaks and terraced walls inside the crater Copernicus.

The Observer 70 EQ also features an aluminum tripod and an EQ-1 equatorial mount. The equatorial mount is a little more complicated to balance and align than the Observer 70 AZ , but the reward is better slow motion control and tracking at magnifications over 100X. Simply point the equatorial axis at Polaris, the North Star, and the telescope tracks celestial objects by turning one slow motion knob. This makes it much easier to use a high power eyepiece while viewing the Moon and Planets. The “EZ Finder II” works by shining a red LED on a small window; just look through the window and line up the red spot with your target. This works OK for bright objects like the Moon and planets but not so well for finding galaxies and deep space objects.
